Free Fall Extension (Fallout) completed

HIMBA and the Comox Valley Regional District are pleased to announce the opening of the newest trail (extension) on Hornby. We’ve added several hundred meters of black diamond jump trail to the end of FreeFall. Locals call this section “Fallout” but officially it is part of Freefall (if we gave official names to every 200m bit of trail we built, the map would get too confusing)

HIMBA volunteers contributed countless hours over 5 work sessions to build this trail. All told, we put in well over 200 person-hours into the project, and it shows. The trail is super smooth, has great jumps and berms, and has already become a must-do section of every ride.

Special thanks to:

  • Will Wood-McDonnell for taking on design and layout duties and being present to guide the process at each build session.
  • Danile May, senior Parks Technician with the CVRD. Daniel has been instrumental in creating a great working relationship between Community organizations like HIMBA, and the CVRD. His trust in HIMBA allowed us to move forward with this build and his guidance helped make sure that the new trail is consistent with the CVRD’s trail guidelines.
  • Tom Rutherford, HIMBA TrailCrew leader and volunteer wrangler extraordinaire.
  • All of the HIMBA volunteers who came out, and especially the kids, Andrew, Ava, Becket, Colter, Juno, Luke and Opal. It was so much fun to work alongside the next generation of Hornby trail builders and riders.

We hope the community will enjoy this new section of trail. It is a black diamond, with some big jumps, but there are ride-arounds on all of the big stuff so even if you are not into getting your wheels off of the ground, go check it out.
